IMDB is running a poll: pick your favorite of past highest grossing Memorial Day films in their years. They’ve listed them from highest to lowest grossing. I thought I’d see how far down the list I got before I got to a film I really loved:

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007): $140M

As mentioned in my last post, I call this one “Giant Woman with Crabs”. This film sucked. I don’t remember whether I saw it in the theater, but if I did, I wanted my money back.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008): $127M

After the amazing third chapter (The Last Crusade), I had high hopes that were dashed by this film.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006): $123M

After the lackluster X-Men 2, this one made the promise of covering one of the best comic book arcs of all time: The Phoenix Saga. Instead of matching the first film, which I loved, it was poor enough to trigger a series reboot.

Fast & Furious 6 (2013) $117M

Haven’t seen this. In fact, I haven’t seen any of these films. I’ve been meaning to.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014): $111M

This was the follow up to the X-Men reboot, First Class, which was, well, first class. I liked this film, but it wasn’t as good as First Class.

The Hangover Part II (2011): $103M

I thought the first film was overrated, though OK. Dodged this bullet.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997): $90M

This film had its moments, but was poor enough that I thankfully didn’t see JP III in theaters.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004): $86M

A film so bad I don’t remember it. I get it mixed up with Deep Impact. Was this the one with the weird Japanese arks?

Bruce Almighty (2003): $86M

This film was decent. Jennifer Aniston sucked in it. At least it was original.

Pearl Harbor (2001): $75M

Tora, Tora, Tora was better. Mediocre.

Mission: Impossible II (2000): $71M

Laughably bad–flying motorcycles.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009): $70M

Dodged another bullet on this sequel to a mildly funny original. I can’t stand Ben Stiller.

Men in Black 3 (2012): $69M

MIB II sucked, so I didn’t see this in theaters. Good thing, cause this one sucked too.

Madagascar (2005): $61M

Didn’t see this. I generally don’t watch animated film unless I hear it’s great.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011): $61M

Didn’t see the first film in theater, and thought it sucked on video, so no, didn’t see this.

The Longest Yard (2005): $59M

Adam Sandler remake of a mediocre Burt Reynolds film: no thanks.

Mission: Impossible (1996): $57M

Decent action film based on a mediocre TV series. I liked this one, unlike the terrible sequel.

Godzilla (1998): $56M

Very crappy American reboot of a classic old Japanese film.

Terminator Salvation (2009): $52M

Terminator 3 sucked, but I went and saw this because I like Christian Bale. I wish I hadn’t.

The Hangover Part III (2013): $50M

Why was this even made?

Epic (2013): $43M

I have never heard of this film.

Tomorrowland (2015): $43M

At least this film was original, but unfortunately, it wasn’t great, or even good.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010): $38M

This was a good original film, but not great.

The Flintstones (1994): $37M

No chance I would see this. Not even on TV.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989): $37M

Finally, a film I really loved.
