Review of “Thor: Ragnarok” (mild spoilers)

The death of Thor’s father, Odin (Anthony “Hannibal” Hopkins), the ruler of Asgard, which is triggered by Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the god of mischief, releases Hela, goddess of death (Cate “Galadriel” Blanchett) who takes over Asgard. Meanwhile, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is banished to the ends of the universe, where he is captured and forced to fight as a gladiator against the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). They escape with the help of a Valkyrie (

Tessa Thompson) and return to Asgard to confront Hela.

This film is funny. The action sequences are excellent. All the main players are in form, especially Hemsworth. The supporting cast (Idris “Luther” Elba as Heimdall, Karl “Dredd” Urban as Skurge, Jeff “Malcolm” Goldblum as Grandmaster, and Taika Waititi as Korg) are all solid. There is a throwaway tie in to Dr. Strange that added nothing to the film; the screen time could have been better spent on the plot. The now usual Easter egg during the credits is similarly unspecial, and presumably foreshadows the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War film.
