Review of “The Sixth Sense” (rewatch)

 * * * * A

I loved “The Sixth Sense” the first time I watched it,

but, knowing the big plot twist, I had never rewatched the film. I finally did, and was blown away. Despite knowing how the film ends, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing it again. The movie has aged incredibly well. Bruce Willis’s low key performance as Dr. Crowe, the somber, slow pace of many of the scenes, and the slow build of tension, are executed in a way M. Night Shyamalan only came close to reproducing in Signs.

Haley Joel Osment gives an incredible performance as Cole, his oscillation between seemingly unreasoning terror and wisdom beyond his years playing a perfect counterpoint to Crowe’s unwavering certainty of his own world view, even as that world falls apart around him. Toni Collette gives excellent support as Cole’s mother, as does Olivia Williams as Crowe’s estranged wife. Great writing, acting, and direction come together to make one of the greatest horror films of all time.
