Leonardo DeCaprio stars as frontier guide Hugh Glass in this brutal, beautifully filmed but glacially paced western. When he is mauled by a bear, John Fitzgerald (played by Tom “Mad Max” Hardy) kills Hugh’s son Hawk and leaves Hugh for dead. Hugh survives despite being alone and weaponless in winter weather, and seeks revenge for Hawk’s murder.
The acting is good, with a solid performance by DeCaprio and an amazing one by an unrecognizable Hardy. The photography is breathtaking. I found the place far too deliberate, and the plot linear and predictable. There is no love story to speak of, an no true heroes – everyone, even Hugh, has some villainous elements.
