Review of "The Old Guard" (mild spoilers)

* * * B

Charlize "Furiosa" Theron leads a band of immortal mercenaries. While they are hunting down an employer (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who has betrayed them, a new immortal (KiKi Layne) is born. An action filled story leads to a climactic battle with evil pharmaceutical mogul Merrick (Harry "Dudley" Melling). Finally, a sequel is teased.

This film was fun, with plenty of good action sequences. The plot was solid, though a bit predictable. The premise was well explored, with no attempt at a hokey explanation, much like Highlander, from which this film draws inspiration. It is also clearly influenced by Marvel's Wolverine. I'd put this film on par with Collateral, the last good Netflix film.

The film is saturated with Hollywood tropes. Most of them--the bad as female leader, the black girl, the gay men, white man bad--are reasonably organic to the plot, and don't feel too forced. There is however, a moment when right after ostracizing one villain, they team up with another, which seems like a complete 180, and I found unbelievable. Still, overall this film is worth seeing.
