Review of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1”

* * * B

When I heard Mockingjay was going to be made into two movies, I was skeptical. Turns out, with good reason. Though the movie was different from the first two installments of the trilogy, darker and more serious, the pace was too slow, and it lacked the climatic energy of the first two. Hopefully, part 2 will deliver, but I can’t believe that this book couldn’t have been made into one good movie. Splitting it seems like a cash grab to me.

That said, the movie was good. Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss carried the film, with expanded roles for supporting actors Donald Sutherland and Philip Seymour Hoffman constantly cranking up the pressure on her character. Julianne Moore did an adequate job in the “Mon Mothma” role, Liam Hemsworth was forgettable as Katniss’s love interest Gale, and Woody Harrelson had a sadly small part.
