* * * * A
The Hitman’s Bodyguard is funny, action packed, and has a couple of good romantic subplots. This was the funnest movie I’ve seen in a while. It was funnier that Guardian’s of the Galaxy 2, and had better action sequences than John Wick 2. And it wasn’t another bloody sequel.
When hitman turned witness Darius Kingcaid (Samuel L. Jackson) is almost killed and his protective detail is shot up, Interpol agent Amelia Roussel (Elodie Yung) convinces her ex-boyfriend, professional bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan “Deadpool” Reynolds) to get him to the Haige to testify against the corrupt president of Belarus (played by Gary Oldman, probably my favorite actor). The two have a long history, Kingcaid having attempted to assassinate Bryce’s charges in the past.
Hilarity and mayhem ensue. Oldman’s cronies will stop at nothing to prevent Kingcaid from testifying. Bryce, once he commits to protecting him, becomes a powerful ally to Kingcaid, who is himself a one man army. Bryce comes to realize that though he is the bodyguard and Kingcaid the assassin, he has protected some bad men, and Kingcaid does have his own twisted moral code, allowing him to see himself as a good man.
This is one of the best movies this year. It lacks the originality of Valerian, City of a Thousand Planets, and has non of the grit of Logan, but makes up for these lacks in laughs and crazy, over the top action. If I had to compare it to a film, it would be Kingsmen, which ironically also stars Samuel L. Jackson.
