“The Last Jedi” delivers an excellent new chapter in the Star Wars saga. It is not a perfect film, but I liked it better than any of the prequels, and would put it on par with “The Force Awakens”. It continues the story of Rey (

Daisy Ridley) and her conflict with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), gives Finn (John Boyega) a subplot that was for me the weakest of the film (though I still liked it), and adds a major thread for Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac).

Much as The Force Awakens mirrored “A New Hope”, The Last Jedi mirrors parts of “The Empire Strikes Back”. In particular, Rey’s story thread has her mentored by Luke as Luke was mentored by Yoda, and captured by Snoke (Andy “Gollum” Serkis), just as Luke was captured by Emperor Palpatine. Finn’s story introduces Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), and mirrors the mission to disable the tractor beam in A New Hope. Poe’s story is the most original, and I liked it the best.

It was awesome to see Luke again, and I really liked what they did with him. Leah had her moments too. Giving Poe (the Wedge Antilles of this third trilogy) a major part in this episode worked well. Finally, the Rey/Kylo story is now in a very interesting place, and I look forward to seeing where it goes next. It’s going to be a long two years. Let’s hope that, in the mean time, next year’s solo Solo movie is as good as “Rogue One” was.
