Review of “Seventh Son”

* * C

Seventh Son, based on the book “The Spook’s Apprentice” by Joseph Delaney is the story of a boy, Tom, played by Ben “Prince Caspia

n” Barnes, who becomes the apprentice of an aging witch hunter played by Jeff “Starman” Bridges. They go up against a coven of witches led by Juliane Moore. Her niece, played by Alicia Vikander (who also starred in the movie I reviewed yesterday, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) is both a spy and a love interest for Tom.

The special effects, designed by John Dykstra, are excellent. Jeff Bridges creates a fairly odd character in Master Gregory. Juliane Moore is a cardboard cutout villain, and the rest of her coven have almost no personality. Barnes and Vikander perform adequately. I’m not sure why this film falls flat. The writing is bland, the story not well motivated. It joins the sad ranks of so so fantasy films.
