Review of “Riddick”

Riddick is the sequel to The Chronicles of Riddick, and continues the story of the titular anti-hero. As the film begins, Riddick (Vin Diesel) has been left for dead on a hostile alien planet by the Necromongers, the villains of the previous film. He spends the first act, which is easily the best, surviving until he is able to reach a mercenary outpost, where he triggers a distress beacon.

In the second act, mercenaries arrive, hoping to collect the bounty on Riddick. He begins a cat and mouse game with them, which is complicated when a second band who are much more professional, show up. In the final act, all hell breaks loose as a rain storm brings out the worst the planet has to offer. It is reminiscent of the first film in the series, Pitch Black.

This film was less ambitious and worked better than Chronicles, and with its much higher production values, was better than Pitch Black. The romantic plot line, such as it was, was pretty terrible, but otherwise most of it worked well. If you liked Pitch Black or Chronicles, you’ll probably like Riddick.
