I finally watched the final installment of the Hunger Games
series, Mockingjay Part 2. I found it entertaining, despite seeing it on the small screen in my hotel room. Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss) and Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) again deliver solid performances, with Liam Helmsworth (Gale) performing adequately. Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland (Snow), and, through the miracle of film, the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman continue to be excellent in their supporting roles, while Juliane Moore (Coin) and the remainder of the cast offer less memorable contributions.
The story focuses on the final battle between the rebels, led by President Coin’s District 13, and the Capital’s armies of “peace keepers”. Before they can attack the capital, they must capture the Capital’s arsenal in District 2. Katniss is shot it the battle, but using Gale’s tactics, they manage to nullify the enemy. In the final battle, Katniss joins the rebels hoping to assassinate President Snow, only to be assigned to a propaganda squad who will be filming behind the front lines, along with Gale and a still dangerously brainwashed Peeta. After Snow’s agents discover Katniss is in the Capital, all hell breaks loose, leading to the final climax of the series.
