The Scorch Trials is the second installment in the Maze Runner series. In it, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), his love interest Theresa (Kaya Scodelario), best friend Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster from Game of Thrones), and the others who survived the maze in the first film find that they haven’t been rescued, but have actually been extracted to have an antidote to the Flare, an
infection which turns its victims into ravaging zombies, extracted from their brains by the evil WCKD (pronounced “wicked”).
They escape into the scorch, a desolate blasted city scape, then cross the dessert and finally reach the “Right Arm”, a group that has been rescuing children from WCKD and taking them to a safe haven. They are betrayed to WCKD, and in the ensuing battle, much of the Right Arm is wiped out and many of the children taken away by WCKD, including their friend Minho (Ki Hong Lee), after which Thomas vows to return to WCKD to free him.
The first film was watchable and moderately interesting. This film was dark, and it was almost impossible to see anything in many scenes, even on a 52″ screen. The plot was predictable and linear. It followed many of the same tropes of post apocolyptica as Mad Max: Fury Road, but without the eye popping visuals and over the top chases. Here’s hoping that the final installment will be at least up to the quality of the first one. This one was poor.
