Review of “Maze Runner: The Death Cure”

After the terrible second film (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials), my expectations for this final chapter were low. I was pleasantly surprised. The Death Cure is terribly predictable, but none-the-less, it’s fun. Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) must rescue their friend Minho (Ki Hong Lee) from the clutches of the evil WCKD (pronounced wicked), led by Janson (Aidan “Little Finger” Gillen).

The effects are slightly better in this installment. The post apocalyptic world is well sketched, and the last city looks very cool. Thomas is forced to choose between his new love interest Brenda (Rosa Salazar) and the woman who betrayed him, Theresa (Kaya Scodelario). Meanwhile, the flare (the zombie plague) has now spread to 75% of the remaining population.

The ending is fairly predictable. Gillen’s villain is a little weak, and came to exactly the end I predicted. The love triangle between Thomas, Brenda, and Theresa keeps you guessing right to the end. It’s no science fiction masterpiece, but if you go in to this film expecting a dumb action movie, you may well find it enjoyable.
