The Bourne Identity is one of my favorite spy thrillers. Unfortunately, the latest episode in the franchise doesn’t nearly live up to the original. While the inferior Jeremy Renner is out, the title role once again being played by Matt Damon, the story seemed a little tired, the action sequences were missing the frenetic intensity of the original, and the film ended up very much where it started out, leaving me wondering what the point was.

Damon was solid as Bourne. Julia Stiles returned as his sometimes ally Nicky Parker. Tommy Lee Jones was looking old but played an adequate villain as CIA Director Robert Dewey. Alicia Vikander plays a new character, the ambitious head of CIA cyber operations. Bourne is off the grid when Parker contacts him with new information about his past after hacking the CIA. The plot revolves around the CIA’s new black op, Ironhand, and the mystery of who killed Bourne’s father.
