Decent acting by The Rock, Karl Urban, and Rosamund Pike fail to redeem the weak script of the film based on the iconic FPS video game. Effects are fine, and suspense is built well, but too many interesting questions are left unanswered. Who created the technology that allows space marines to instantaneously transport to the hell planet? Worse, writer David Callum can’t seem to make up his mind whether the creatures of the hell planet are the result of scientific experiment or supernatural forces, and makes the answer an unsatisfying “both”.
