Review of “Big Hero 6” (mild spoilers)

* * * * A

Big Hero 6 is an animated film based on the Marvel comic of the same name. The hero of the story, Hiro, is drawn into a battle against the evil “Kabuki Masked Man” when, after he shows off his newly invented microbots at

a contest to get into his older brother Tadashi’s university, the villain steals them, killing Tadashi in the process.

Hiro, accompanied by his brother’s healthcare robot Baymax and lab mates Fred, Go Go, Honey Lemon, and Wasabi (voiced by Damon Wayans), go up against the masked man. Hiro must overcome his desire to use Baymax to take revenge, and rather learn who the mystery man is and why he has stolen the microbots.

Pixar animation may encourage comparisons to the Incredibles, but Big Hero 6 doesn’t play the genre for laughs. The story is fairly original, and is set in an interesting near future alternate universe, were Tokyo and San Franscisco are merged in the city of San Fransokyo, and Hiro, Tadashi, and Go Go are clearly Japanese, but the other characters are not. On the whole, this is an excellent film.
