Ant Man exceeded my expectations. It was a good, entertaining film. Paul Rudd was excellent as the ant man, as was Michael Douglas as mentor and inventor Hank Pym. Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel in the Hobbit movies) plays Hank’s daughter Hope solidly. Corey Stall (Ephram in the Strain TV series) does a decent job as the villain, though his character is fairly weakly written.
The twin themes of good vs. evil and of the redemption of Scott Lang by becoming Ant Man counterpoint he usual special effects and crazy action sequences. There are tie ins to the Avengers, including references to Stark Industries and a run in with the Falcon. Scott’s cell mate and his gang provide comic relief, and his struggle to redeem himself in the eyes of his ex-wife and validate his daughter’s high opinion of him nicely booked the story.
A sequel has been announced for 2018. Here’s hoping its as good as this first installment.
