Review of “Allegiant”

When I saw that the third movie

in the Divergent trilogy had an 18% (rotten) score on Rotten Tomatoes, I was prepared to be even more disappointed than I was with

Insurgent. But since I really liked the first film, I felt compelled to give Allegiant a shot. I’m glad I did.

If you’ve seen the first two films, you’ll know that the very little of what lies outside of the wall that surrounds Chicago remains largely unexplored. At the end of Insurgent, Tris (Shailene Woodley) discovered a message claiming that the dystopian society in the city was created as an experiment to try to save the world.

The third installment begins with Evelyn (Naomi Watts), the mother of Four (Theo James), sealing the wall for no apparent reason and executing the conspirators who sided with the Erudite in the previous film. Four rescues Tris’s brother Caleb and they escape, along with Peter and Christina, going over the wall. The rest of the movie explores the truth of the message discovered in the second film.

The acting in the film is good, and there are some nice action sequences. This film has some interesting sets and more special effects than the previous two. Jeff “Dumb” Daniels plays a major roll in the second act. The action returns to Chicago for the final climactic scenes. Though nowhere nearly as good as Divergent, Allegiant did a decent job of wrapping up the series.
