I’m going to list my favorite films and series of the year, with links to the reviews. Before I do, a couple of honorable mentions:

This much maligned film was still pretty good, despite its flaws. If you haven’t seen it, its worth a watch.

Another flawed film that none-the-less was fun and is worth a watch. About half of this film was really good.

The second season of this Netflix exclusive series would be just as good as the first, except that the first was more surprising because it was the first. If you aren’t already a NetFlix subscriber, this is one more reason you should be.

Top Ten

Wonder Woman’s back story was surprisingly good. I think the reason it was better than the Justice League was that it wasn’t trying to do anything other than tell a good story, and there was a single main character, so it was less all over the place.

Probably the most underrated film this year, Valerian is flawed, but none-the-less, parts of it are absolutely brilliant. If you didn’t see it in the theater, you are really missing out on the full effect. It’s visual environments rival those of Cameron’s Avatar.

This remake of a classic Yule Brenner western, which was itself based on the Japanese classic The Seven Samurai, was surprisingly good.

Now with two good seasons dubbed into English, this animated teen superhero series is fun, but also dark and creepy in places. Based on a long running manga (comic book series), there is plenty of good material for future seasons.

This is a mindlessly fun, funny, action filled romp. Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds are paired up in a great buddy pic.

Logan is the grittiest X-Men film by far. While I felt the ending could have been a little stronger, this was the worthy finale to the original X-Men series that Last Stand was not.

Few expected M. Night Shyamalan to return to form. What a twist! He did. James McAvoy is outstanding in this horror/fantasy that ends up being connected to Unbreakable. Let’s hope the upcoming Glass is as good.

I found Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 a bit disappointing, since the first episode was probably my favorite Marvel film. I went into Thor: Ragnarok with low expectations, based on the good but not great Thor: The Dark World. Those expectations were blown out of the water by a science fiction/fantasy very reminiscent of the first Guardians. Fun!

Based on the Daredevil series, I wasn’t expecting much from NetFlix’s Punisher series. What they delivered blew away the three Punisher films, and was better and more consistent than Daredevil. Another great reason to get NetFlix.

Though not perfect, this film was a great addition to the series. I liked it better than The Force Awakens. I hope the final installment in the series, hopefully coming in 2019, is at least this good.
